Edgar Magana Captures Fourth Place in National Turf Bowl

2017 Feb 17

Edgar Magana of Huntington Station, NY captured fourth place in the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America's (GCSAA) Collegiate Turf Bowl Competition in Orlando on Feb. 9, the best finish in the history of SUNY Delhi's turf management program. Magana is pursuing a bachelor's degree in Golf and Sports Turf Management at SUNY Delhi.

The Turf Bowl team competed against 57 teams from 36 schools around the country, including large institutions like Penn State, Michigan State and Purdue University. This year's results build on an 11th place finish last year and a 32nd place finish in 2015.

"The Turf Bowl accomplishment speaks volumes to what we are doing as a program, all the hard work the students have put in, and the level of future turf managers we are training," said Marvin Seaman, Assistant Professor of Applied Sciences at SUNY Delhi. "This competition was a great experience for our students. Not only did they get to compete in the Turf Bowl, but the GSCAA conference provides valuable professional networking opportunities."

The Turf Bowl, held in partnership with John Deere Golf, features a written case study and a test covering agronomic, business, and financial management aspects of the turf superintendent profession. A total of $10,000 in cash and prizes were awarded to the top 10 teams.

The SUNY Delhi team consisted of Golf and Sports Turf Management students James Carlton of Marcellus, Tyler Warren of Baldwinsville, Edgar Magana of Huntington Station, and Andre Kepler of Newport, NH.

SUNY Delhi earned a trip to the nationals by defending its title in the two-year division of the Turf Bowl at the New York State Turfgrass Association (NYSTA) Conference in Rochester on Nov. 16 and 17. Like the national Turf Bowl, the state competition tested the students' ability to identify various types of turf, weeds, and insects and complete a written exam.

With both associate and bachelor degree programs in Golf and Sports Turf Management, SUNY Delhi is a national leader in golf and grounds management. The programs prepare graduates for employment and leadership positions at golf courses and other recreation facilities with plenty of hands-on practice on the college golf course and athletic fields as well as through required summer internships. SUNY Delhi's graduates manage golf courses and sports facilities across the country.
