James Carlton Defends Two-Year NYSTA Turf Bowl Title

2017 Feb 10

James Carlton of Marcellus, NY defended SUNY Delhi's title in the two-year division of the Turf Bowl at the New York State Turfgrass Association (NYSTA) Conference in Rochester on Nov. 16 and 17. Carlton is pursuing a bachelor's degree in Golf and Sports Turf Management at SUNY Delhi.

As part of the annual conference, SUNY Delhi students competed in two-year and four-year divisions in the Turf Bowl, which tests their ability to identify various types of turf, weeds and insects and complete a written exam. Students and their faculty spend hours preparing for the competition. "There's a lot of pride involved," said Marvin Seaman, Assistant Professor of Applied Sciences and one of the coaches of the Turf Grass teams.

SUNY Delhi students went into the competition as defending champions in both divisions, maintaining their two-year title. The winning team consisted of students Edgar Magana, Andre Kepler, Alex Baum and Mario Magalsi. James Carlton, Tyler Warren, Ryan Jeskie, and Patrick Vibbard made up the four-year team.

In addition to the Turf Bowl, the NYSTA Conference provided students with networking opportunities and scholarship awards.

The NYSTA Conference is one of two Turf Bowls that SUNY Delhi students compete in each year. At the 2016 National Turf Bowl in San Diego, Delhi finished 11th out of more than 60 schools from across the country.

That competition involves similar challenges in turf, weed and insect identification and a written exam plus tests of math and equipment knowledge. SUNY Delhi will compete in the National Turf Bowl again this coming February in Orlando.

"We have a very strong team going this year," Seaman said. "I expect them to do very well."
