Simba Mafundikwa of New York City Honored by SUNY Chancellor

Simba Mafundikwa of New York City has been named a 2017 recipient of the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence. Simba is among an elite group of students who will be honored by the State University of New York on April 5 at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany.

"Simba is a model SUNY Delhi student--focused, driven, and engaged," said SUNY Delhi President Michael Laliberte. "I am extremely proud of Simba's accomplishments and honored to see him recognized with a Chancellor's Award. Simba's dedication to personal and academic excellence will carry him to success in whatever goals he pursues."

In addition to maintaining a 3.57 GPA in Architecture and Design, Mafundikwa serves as president of the SUNY Delhi Architecture Club, vice president of the Black Student Union, and senior Student Ambassador for the college. His academic achievements have earned him the Merrill Family Scholarship, J. William Harniman Scholarship, the Dennis Callas Honors Scholarship, and membership in Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society. He is also a member of the Student Conduct Council and a Sustainability Advocate. As captain of the SUNY Delhi men's soccer team, Mafundikwa helped lead the team to a national championship appearance in 2015. He is a multiple Student Scholar Athlete Award recipient since 2014 and was named to the USCAA National All-Academic Teams in 2015 and 2016. Mafundikwa has also been active in pursuing professional opportunities, including summer internships as an assistant to architect and public artist Chat Travieso in New York City and at Vengesayi Architects in Zimbabwe. He plans to seek work in Berlin, Germany following graduation.
