Students Place in Top Ten of National Turf Competition

Seven SUNY Delhi students competed in the Golf Course Superintendent's Association of America 2020 John Deere Collegiate Turf Bowl in February. One Team placed eigth out of 56 teams, beating out colleges and universities from all over the United States and Canada. The Turf Bowl, organized annually by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA), was held in Orlando, Florida. The competition rigorously tests turf students' knowledge in agronomy, business management, turfgrass management, environmental management, and plant science. In the competition, student teams were challenged to identify physical and visual samples of plants and equipment, answer a wide variety of questions, and produce a written case study.

Construction Management Students Place Third in Regional Competition

Six students completed in the Region 1 Associated Schools of Construction Heavy Civil Construction Management Competition in November 2020.

Alexander Goldstein Wins Regional Young Chef Competition, Advances to Nationals

In early March, SUNY Delhi culinary arts management major Alexander Goldstein won the 2020 Chaine des Rotisseurs Northeast Regional Young Chef Competition, earning a spot in the national competition to be held at a future date. In the competition, four contestants prepared three-course meals from mystery baskets. Each had 30 minutes to write a menu and 3.5 hours to prepare an appetizer, entree, and dessert. Only one protein, Cornish game hen, was revealed ahead of time. Contestants also had access to common stock items.

Students Win Local Baking Competition

Five students on the SUNY Delhi Pastry Arts Gingerbread Team won the 2019 Destination Oneonta Gingerbread Jubilee competition in December 2019 in Oneonta, NY. The team placed first out of 11 entries in the adult group category. The design for the cookie masterpiece was themed after the 1955 Disney movie, Lady and the Tramp. Team members Jessica Biller, Dyani Woodson, Shaelie McClenon, Emma Ryther, and Sydney Diaz worked on the house for almost two months, getting together several times a week to draw the design, bake and build the gingerbread structure, and decorate the intricate details of the baby blue Victorian era movie house.

Construction Management & Technology Students Place 2nd in Regional Competition

Six Construction Management students represented SUNY Delhi at the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Region One 2019 Student Competition. The students presented a pre-construction plan as if they were a project team for a pier deck rehabilitation project. They prepared and presented a proposal including a cost analysis, schedule, logistics plan, work requirements, and work plan. They also had to host a simulated start up meeting with a Q&A about project sequencing, means and methods, and potential risks & mitigations with representatives from Weeks Marine, a professional firm who sponsored the competition. SUNY Delhi's team placed second during the November 2019 competition that was held in Albany, NY. The Associated Schools of Construction is a professional association for the development and advancement of construction curricula, teaching, research, and service. The ASC Region One is comprised of the colleges and universities offering four-year construction engineering and management degrees in Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia.

Students Participate in First Food Pantry Cooking Competition

Ten SUNY Delhi students competed in an evening of fun, frenzy, and big flavors to shine a light on food insecurity among college students during the inaugural SUNY Delhi Food Pantry Cooking Competition. Held at the college's new Bluestone pub and restaurant, each team was given an hour to create an entree from a mystery box filled with items typically found in food pantries. The inspiration for the competition was to show that food pantry items can be used to create delicious and unique meals. Special guests at the event included New York State Food and Anti-Hunger Coordinator Susan Zimet, SUNY Delhi President Michael Laliberte, and representatives from the Delhi, NY Food Bank. The winners of the competition were Lauren O'Leary and Emily Tekel. Read a full recap of the competition.

Daniel Hess Competes in National Culinary Competition

Recent SUNY Delhi culinary arts graduate Daniel Hess of Salisbury Mills, NY, was one of four students in the nation who competed in the annual Student Chef of the Year 2019 competition this August in Orlando, FL. Hess earned his spot was representing the northeast region of the country after being named the Regional Student Chef of the Year in the spring. While he didn't win the national title, we are so proud of Dan, his dedication and hard work, and how well he represented SUNY Delhi in this intense competition! Dr. David Brower, Dean of the School of Business & Hospitality Management remarked, "Dan's food looked simply amazing and the judges provided high praise for his techniques. He worked like a well-oiled machine and his countless hours of practice were evident to the judges and spectators alike. Special thanks go out to his coaches Chef James Margiotta and Chef Sean Pehrsson for the many hours that they dedicated to mentoring Dan as he prepared for the competition. It was truly an honor and privilege to watch Dan transform his ingredients into the spectacular dishes you will see below. Simply incredible work! Students Compete in National Collegiate Landscape Competition

Horticulture Sciences student Carly Pitt and Golf and Sports Turf Management major Mario Malagisi recently competed in the annual National Collegiate Landscape Competition sponsored by the National Association of Landscape Professionals. The event was held in Collins, Colorado in March 2019. Team Delhi competed against many larger institutions and Carly placed in the top half of the Woody Plant Identification competition and Mario placed in the top third of competitors for the Tractor Loader Backhoe competition. The students also competed in 2-5 other competitions and were able to meet up with a SUNY Delhi alumnus attending Colorado State University for an advanced degree.

SUNY Delhi Student to Represent USA in International Young Chef Competition

Carly Yezzo '20, a culinary arts management major at SUNY Delhi, has been chosen to represent the USA in the international Chaine Des Rotisseurs Young Chef Competition in 2020. Yezzo qualified for the prestigious competition based on her performance in the national competition June 1-2, 2019 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Students compete in SkillsUSA New York Competition

Six students recently competed in the annual SkillsUSA New York State post-secondary competition held in Alfred, NY in March 2019. Team Delhi returned home with two second-place finishes, two third-place finishes, and one fourth-place finish.

Students place in top five of NAHB Construction Competition

Five students in the Residential Construction program traveled to Las Vegas, NV, to compete in the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Student Competition. Held annually during the International Builders Show, the 2019 competition was held in February 2019 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The students were defending SUNY Delhi's national title from a first place victory in the associate's degree competition in 2018. SUNY Delhi placed 4th out of 20 teams in the 2019 competition. Students compete in GSCAA Turf Bowl

Ten Golf and Sports Turf students spent seven days in San Diego, CA in February 2019 to compete in the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America's (GCSAA) annual Collegiate Turf Bowl Competition. SUNY Delhi placed 15th and 33rd out of 63 teams and captured first and third in the score for the case study section of the exam. Read more about their experience.

American Culinary Federation National Student Chef of the Year

SUNY Delhi culinary arts major Julio Chavez of Sodus, NY, won the national title of "Student Chef of the Year 2018" on July 19, 2018. The culinary competition, sanctioned and organized by the American Culinary Federation (ACF), was held at the "Cook. Craft. Create. National Convention & Show" in New Orleans, LA. The Student Chef of the Year recognizes an up-and-coming student who possesses a high degree of professionalism, culinary skill, and passion for the culinary arts.

SUNY Delhi culinary arts major Daniel Hess of Salisbury Mills, NY, is one of four students in the nation qualified to compete in the annual Student Chef of the Year 2019 competition this summer in Orlando, FL. Hess earned his spot in the finals this Saturday by winning the Northeast Rregional title at Atlantic Cape Community College Academy of Culinary Arts in Atlantic City, NJ.
