SUNY Delhi to Build Nursing Simulation Laboratory
The lab is funded by a $110,000 grant from the SUNY's High Needs Program.
Delhi, NY (12/04/2023) — SUNY Delhi's School of Nursing will build a state-of-the-art nursing simulation lab on campus, funded by a $110,000 grant from the State University of New York's High Needs Program. The competitive SUNY grant program funds academic programs that connect directly to specific workforce needs within New York State.
The investment comes on the tail of new legislation signed into law by Governor Kathy Hochul earlier this year, allowing nursing students to complete up to one-third of their clinical training through simulation experiences. The ability to perform clinical training in a simulation environment is particularly significant in rural areas where fewer healthcare facilities are available for clinical training placement. Utilizing a simulation lab will expedite training to help address the nursing shortage and improve care for New Yorkers.
"The new simulation environment will provide our nursing students a safe, supportive place to immerse in reality-based patient care scenarios and case studies," said Cecilia DeCotes, Assistant Dean of the School of Nursing, Arts, and Sciences at SUNY Delhi. "Our students are excited to be able to complete part of their clinicals right on campus without waiting for clinical placement in a healthcare facility."
SUNY Delhi's nursing simulation lab will incorporate two hospital beds with interactive high-fidelity manikins operated through audiovisual simulator equipment. The lab is expected to be fully operational by the Fall 2024 semester.
