Healthcare Textbook by SUNY Delhi Nursing Professor Receives National Award

Elizabeth Pratt's book earns second place in Book of the Year Awards by American Journal of Nursing

Delhi, NY (04/24/2026) — Health Promotion: A Guide to Providing Proactive and Holistic Care, written by SUNY Delhi Associate Professor of Nursing Elizabeth Pratt, MSN, RNC-E, CNE, earned second place in the 2025 Nursing Book of the Year Awards by the American Journal of Nursing (AJN). The award recognizes outstanding contributions to nursing education and practice.

Published in 2025 by Cognella, the textbook equips nurses with the knowledge and tools they need to integrate health promotion into patient care and help those they treat live healthier lives. It emphasizes the importance of preventive care, including concepts of health restoration and maintenance across all age ranges and health conditions.

"Much of the book grew out of the content I've used in my Nursing Health Promotion course at SUNY Delhi," Pratt said. "Over the years, I've developed activities to help students view health promotion from a holistic perspective that considers not only physical and mental wellness but also social determinants of health, including how to stay safe when using social media for education and outreach."

The American Nursing Journal judging panel commended the book for its emphasis on the role of environmental factors in health and its inclusion of complementary and alternative approaches to health promotion.

"This recognition highlights the caliber of our faculty and their dedication to advancing nursing education," said Dr. Cheryle Levitt, Associate Dean of Nursing at SUNY Delhi. "Professor Pratt's work exemplifies the innovation and real-world relevance we strive to bring to our students every day."

Professor Pratt has taught in SUNY Delhi's online RN-to-BSN nursing program since 2009. Consistently ranked among the best in the nation for its high standards and integrity, the program faculty are lifelong learners dedicated to preparing students for the realities of modern nursing through evidence-based practice, leadership development, and a real-world perspective.
