Eleven SUNY Delhi students spent their February 2020 spring break volunteering with the Delhi College Interfaith Club on a mission trip in Puerto Rico. The group worked with service organization Catholic Mission Trips in cleaning and repairing houses for local residents in need. They stayed at the Communidad Misionera de Villaregia, a missionary center, in the city of Arecibo. During the trip, the students worked on several projects, one of which included cleaning and repairing a house that lost its roof during Hurricane Maria. The resident was grateful for the help because several of the rooms had issues with standing water for two years since the hurricane hit. The group also toured the southern part of the island which suffered damage during a recent earthquake. Catholic Mission Trips plans to offer assistance in the area in the future. The students were accompanied by the SUNY Delhi campus chaplain James Krueger and his wife, Maureen. They also met other volunteers from across the world. Past Alternative Spring Break trip groups have traveled to rural Virginia, Houston, TX, Baton Rouge, LA, and Belize.

The SUNY Delhi Division of Student Life held their annual leadership award ceremony virtually on May 19, 2020. Several students were recognized for contributing to the campus community, overcoming obstacles, or significantly improving the quality of life at the college. In early March, SUNY Delhi culinary arts management major Alexander Goldstein won the 2020 Chaine des Rotisseurs Northeast Regional Young Chef Competition, earning a spot in the national competition to be held at a future date. In the competition, four contestants prepared three-course meals from mystery baskets. Each had 30 minutes to write a menu and 3.5 hours to prepare an appetizer, entree, and dessert. Only one protein, Cornish game hen, was revealed ahead of time. Contestants also had access to common stock items.

Two outstanding SUNY Delhi students have received the prestigious 2020 Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence. Paige Keith and Arielle Moheimani were among an elite group of students to be recognized with the award honoring State University of New York (SUNY) students who have best demonstrated their integration of academic excellence with other aspects of their lives, such as leadership, campus involvement, athletics, career achievement, community service, or creative and performing arts. "Paige Keith and Arielle Moheimani have shown exceptional dedication to scholarship, service, and leadership," said SUNY Delhi President Michael R. Laliberte. "They have pursued excellence in all their endeavors and are well-deserving of this recognition. I am proud of their accomplishments and confident in their abilities to be successful in their chosen careers." Paige Keith is a veterinary science technology major from Elmore, VT. A standout student, Keith has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout her studies in one of the most rigorous programs at SUNY Delhi. Keith leads her peers through mentoring and tutoring. With a passion for large animals, she works at the college farm and is involved with Equine Club, educating the community on animal health. Keith earned an internship at Cornell University working on two research projects. Arielle Moheimani is a mechatronics major from Homer, NY. Moheimani is graduating a semester early from the demanding mechatronics program with a 3.8 GPA. With plans to attend medical school, she is a disciplined student, peer tutor, and a role model for females in non-traditional careers. Moheimani has excelled as a student-athlete and team captain in cross country and track and field, achieving a NAC championship last year. She also finds the time to volunteer for various efforts on campus and in the community.

Nine students volunteered at the annual MathCounts day at SUNY Delhi in February 2020. MathCounts is a national program that promotes math learning in Grades 6-8. SUNY Delhi has been the hosting site of Catskills/Broome Regional Competition since 1998. Every year middle schools from Ithaca, Syracuse, and Binghamton areas bring students of talent and enthusiasm to participate in multiple rounds of math questions in algebra, spatial and quantitative reasoning. Dr. Walter Bray with his engineering colleagues Frank Roma and Sallie Valentine coordinate a panel of judges. When Associate Professor of Mathematics, Joan Erickson joined the MathCounts team in 2005, she began to coordinate SUNY Delhi students as volunteers to better work with the visiting children, coaches, and parents.

The SUNY Delhi Athletics Department recently recognized 39 student-athletes who made the grade to become Broncos Scholar Athletes. SUNY Delhi Director of Athletics Bob Backus introduced the distinguished student-athletes at halftime of the women's basketball team's home game versus Norwich on Monday, Feb. 17. SUNY Delhi President Dr. Michael R. Laliberte and numerous faculty members who serve as academic team liaisons were in attendance to honor these students. In order to be a SUNY Delhi Scholar Athlete, students must possess a 3.50 or greater overall grade point average through at least one semester during their competitive athletic season. Many of the scholar athletes have or will receive all-academic honors from their NCAA conferences and the USCAA. Seven SUNY Delhi students competed in the Golf Course Superintendent's Association of America 2020 John Deere Collegiate Turf Bowl in February. One Team placed eigth out of 56 teams, beating out colleges and universities from all over the United States and Canada. The Turf Bowl, organized annually by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA), was held in Orlando, Florida. The competition rigorously tests turf students' knowledge in agronomy, business management, turfgrass management, environmental management, and plant science. In the competition, student teams were challenged to identify physical and visual samples of plants and equipment, answer a wide variety of questions, and produce a written case study.

Fourteen students and one faculty member spent part of their January 2020 winter break on SUNY Delhi's annual service-learning trip to South Africa. Delhi has taken over 100 students to South Africa over the past nine years. Working with EcoLife Expeditions, students spend over 20 days in a "mobile classroom" traveling around the country to learn about wildlife management and the role that veterinary science plays in disease control, animal rehabilitation, and one-health style programs that strive to care for and improve the health of people, animals, plants, and our shared environment.

Each academic year, the prestigious Presidential Scholarship is awarded to select incoming students from local area high schools. Recipients must have a grade point average of a 90 or better in high school and submit official SAT/ACT scores. This unique full-tuition scholarship (less TAP), including mandatory fees provided to students during their time at SUNY Delhi, providing they maintain a 3.3 GPA.

More than 200 SUNY Delhi students completed certificates, associate, bachelor's, and master's degrees in December 2019. SUNY Delhi welcomed new students who enrolled for the Spring 2020 semester. More than 150 students joined the Bronco family and began taking classes in January.

Twelve students were inducted into SUNY Delhi's Epsilon Alpha chapter of Delta Alpha Pi (DAPi) International Honor Society this fall. DAPi was formed in 2004 and celebrates and supports academic achievement for post-secondary students with disabilities. Members participate in activities that develop skills in leadership and advocacy, and work to combat negative stereotypes of people with disabilities. Membership is offered to students who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.1 or above, completed at least 24 credits, and identify as an individual with a disability or demonstrate an interest in disability issues. SUNY Delhi announces its Dean's List for the fall 2019 semester, a recognition of academic achievement for students who are enrolled in six or more credits and earn at least a 3.5 grade-point average for the semester.

Nineteen students received a "Best in Show" award for their entries into the Fall 2019 Student Research & Creative Achievement Day. At the end of each semester SUNY Delhi celebrates the research and creative activity from students and faculty. The Fall 2019 exhibits included posters and presentations from students enrolled in courses in Statistics, Art, Architecture, Science, History, Mechatronics, Literature, and Veterinary Sciences, as well as students from the Honors Program. The Best in Show winners were Maranda Klinger, Carly Yezzo, Michael Zerniak, Carl Kernochan, Christine Briggs, Jennifer Gast, Michelle Milano, Jailene Ortiz, Aileen Zuniga, Anya Diones, Ken Gray Jr., Summer Phillip, Tristian Wellman, Connor Tucker, Timothy Joyce, Antonio Russo, Ayasha Michie, Tatyana Hinton, and Kendra Davis Professor of Biology Jack Tessier helped to organize the show and says that research projects are important experiences for students because they give a glimpse of what professionals in the discipline do, require critical and high-level thinking, and provide a chance to practice presentation skills.

Five students on the SUNY Delhi Pastry Arts Gingerbread Team won the 2019 Destination Oneonta Gingerbread Jubilee competition in December 2019 in Oneonta, NY. The team placed first out of 11 entries in the adult group category. The design for the cookie masterpiece was themed after the 1955 Disney movie, Lady and the Tramp. Team members Jessica Biller, Dyani Woodson, Shaelie McClenon, Emma Ryther, and Sydney Diaz worked on the house for almost two months, getting together several times a week to draw the design, bake and build the gingerbread structure, and decorate the intricate details of the baby blue Victorian era movie house.

Six Construction Management students represented SUNY Delhi at the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Region One 2019 Student Competition. The students presented a pre-construction plan as if they were a project team for a pier deck rehabilitation project. They prepared and presented a proposal including a cost analysis, schedule, logistics plan, work requirements, and work plan. They also had to host a simulated start up meeting with a Q&A about project sequencing, means and methods, and potential risks & mitigations with representatives from Weeks Marine, a professional firm who sponsored the competition. SUNY Delhi's team placed second during the November 2019 competition that was held in Albany, NY. The Associated Schools of Construction is a professional association for the development and advancement of construction curricula, teaching, research, and service. The ASC Region One is comprised of the colleges and universities offering four-year construction engineering and management degrees in Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia.

Ten SUNY Delhi students competed in an evening of fun, frenzy, and big flavors to shine a light on food insecurity among college students during the inaugural SUNY Delhi Food Pantry Cooking Competition. Held at the college's new Bluestone pub and restaurant, each team was given an hour to create an entree from a mystery box filled with items typically found in food pantries. The inspiration for the competition was to show that food pantry items can be used to create delicious and unique meals. Special guests at the event included New York State Food and Anti-Hunger Coordinator Susan Zimet, SUNY Delhi President Michael Laliberte, and representatives from the Delhi, NY Food Bank. The winners of the competition were Lauren O'Leary and Emily Tekel. Read a full recap of the competition.

Carly Pitt '20, a senior in the Horticulture Sciences major, was selected as one of the student ambassadors for the National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) annual conference, LANDSCAPES, which was held in October 2019 in Louisville, KY. Students from landscaping and horticulture college programs from across the country apply for this position and only six students are selected. Read more about her experience at the conference.

Veterinary Technology student, Stephanie Jones, has started a new program that brings dogs into the Veterans Resource Center on campus center three days a week. Mission Vets Helping Pets provides a win-win for dogs from the local animal shelter and student-veterans at SUNY Delhi. The visits to the Veterans Resource Center help the dogs, who are up for adoption but need some extra socialization, while also offering stress-relief benefits to student veterans.

Six students in the Golf & Sports Turf Management major were awarded the New York State Turfgrass Association scholarship for the 2019-2020 school year. The recipients are Mario Malagisi, Conner Ryan, John Sweeney, Sean Tillman, Brooks Beschler, and Dylan Beckstead.

Students and Faculty from the Veterinary Science Technology program recently attended the Upstate NY meeting for the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) and two Broncos came home with scholarships in hand! Congratulations to Ryan Yang and Sabiya O'Brien for earning the Sam Martin Upstate Branch Scholarship Award.

SUNY Delhi mechatronics major Rose Suarez was one of 42 students from across New York State to receive the 2019 Norman R. McConney Award for EOP Student Excellence. Recognizing students enrolled in the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) who have overcome significant obstacles in life to achieve their educational and personal goals, the award was presented in October 2019 by SUNY Chancellor Kristina M. Johnson at a ceremony in New York City.

Recent SUNY Delhi culinary arts graduate Daniel Hess of Salisbury Mills, NY, was one of four students in the nation who competed in the annual Student Chef of the Year 2019 competition this August in Orlando, FL. Hess earned his spot was representing the northeast region of the country after being named the Regional Student Chef of the Year in the spring. While he didn't win the national title, we are so proud of Dan, his dedication and hard work, and how well he represented SUNY Delhi in this intense competition! Dr. David Brower, Dean of the School of Business & Hospitality Management remarked, "Dan's food looked simply amazing and the judges provided high praise for his techniques. He worked like a well-oiled machine and his countless hours of practice were evident to the judges and spectators alike. Special thanks go out to his coaches Chef James Margiotta and Chef Sean Pehrsson for the many hours that they dedicated to mentoring Dan as he prepared for the competition. The O'Connor Center for Community Engagement (OCCE) at SUNY Delhi has recognized over 60 students for their outstanding commitment to community service.

Six students have been inducted into Chi Alpha Epsilon (XAE) National Honor Society at SUNY Delhi. The students were recognized during the annual XAE induction and reception held in May 2019. Chi Alpha Epsilon recognizes the academic achievements of college students in access and scholar programs. Its purposes are to promote continued high academic standards, to foster increased communication among its members, and to honor academic excellence achieved by those students.

Twelve students have been inducted into SUNY Delhi's chapter of Tau Phi Zeta (TPZ) National Honor Society this spring. TPZ was formed in 2015 and recognizes students enrolled in Veterinary Technology programs for their academic achievement, leadership, character, and professional excellence. Membership is offered to students who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or above, a demonstrated commitment to caring for animals, and desirable qualities of strong character, work ethic, and professional behavior. Members also participate in service activities on campus and in the surrounding community.

Carly Yezzo '20, a culinary arts management major at SUNY Delhi, has been chosen to represent the USA in the international Chaine Des Rotisseurs Young Chef Competition in 2020. Yezzo qualified for the prestigious competition based on her performance in the national competition June 1-2, 2019 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
